The Wisdom of Dan Fogelberg

The Wisdom of Dan Fogelberg

I never thought I would see the day when I felt compelled to walk by the television news with my hands over my eyes and ears.  My wife, Linda, is a political news aficionado.  She has a large need for me to sit down and watch the media’s version of Secretary Clinton, Mr. Trump, Senator Sanders, and others parading their messages in front of me.  I have an equally large need for me to go to the far end of our house and read a book.  Our respective needs increasingly collide.  Her temporary tolerance for sloppy thinking, misuse of language/image, and for hearing promises that can’t possibly be kept far exceeds my own.

We can’t be the only ones in this situation.

Unwilling to become hopeless, I find I can only maintain a center of positive attitude by NOT immersing myself in the media’s callow pursuit of the most unworthy parts of our attention and the most unsavory aspects of the candidates.  And it’s our own fault that this is happening because we consistently fail to reach for the remote and hit OFF regularly.

Driving along in my car and listening to Pandora recently, the familiar voice of Dan Fogelberg grabbed my attention.

Love when you can
Cry when you have to
Be who you must, that’s a part of the plan
Await your arrival
With simple survival
And one day we’ll all understand
One day we’ll all understand
One day we’ll all understand

Dan Fogelberg – Part Of The Plan Lyrics | MetroLyrics

There is absolutely NOTHING I can do to influence the current political situation of my country except wait to vote.  And vote wisely when the time comes.  Understanding is probably not possible.  Controlling is several degrees of impossible beyond that.

So I’m going to pin my hopes on Mr. Fogelberg’s lyrics.

There is no question I am surviving, distraught though I may be.

There is also no question that I hope to understand some day.  I want it all to make some sort of sense that only the passage of time can provide.

What are you doing to get through this ugly period of little understanding and even less control?

I really need help here.

Listening to music like you. Ignoring Facebook and trying to filter it the best I can. My wife has said that I’ve been annoying her with political rhetoric. So I have calmed down quite a bit. I watch movies a lot to keep the political theater off the tv. I don’t read books at all. That’s about it.

Thanks, Tom, for your wonderful response. Music grabs me. So does poetry. The combination is somedays a balm. Your wife may be correct. Sing to her. To my own wife’s annoyance we were watching Joan Baez’ 75th (can you believe it?) Birthday Concert on PBS where she (and i as it turned out) sang “Hard Times, Come Again No More.” My wife wisely considered it a therapeutic moment for me and ignored my voice and the pending tears that momentarily accompanied the song. We have to grab those moments where we can don’t we? George

    Hey George!

My friend, you need to recognize that this is a particularly UGLY period in our history while keeping faith in the basic good sense of the average American voter. If you were a kid, an average college student or you were a college graduate living in your parents basement, you might want to fuss and complain about the unfairness of life generally; but if you are an average American, an entrepreneur, a small business owner or a gainfully employed adult, you might just have a whole different perspective.

We need to reduce government interference in our every day lives and take responsibility for the success (or failure) of ourselves as individuals in our society and stop complaining about all that’s wrong in our lives and make things right. America is all about doing things right and being individually successful without the intervention of our Federal government.

Americans stop seeking a solution when the solution rests in the hands of each of us as individual, free thinking Americans!!!

    Hi George:
As a avid student of American History, one must realize that our present political roster of candidates is not without precedent! All one has to do is look back at good ole Warren G. …..The only difference we have today is that our political discourse is in our face 24/7. Consider in the day that NYC once had 21 daily newspapers. The medium may have changed, but if you reviewed some of those papers and their stories you come back to the old but wise adage …the more things change the more they stay the same!

The times they are changing! – maybe not so much as we would like to think!

HI Dave. I like American History, too. And I dod realize history sometimes goes in repetitive cycles. I think I am currently grabbed by not only the content but the tenacity and volume of the ceaseless media. George
